How To Make Your Giants Fall

Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. “I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag, and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine (1 Samuel 17:38-40).

I was reading a devotion by Susan Gregory* and she wrote about how, in this passage, David took off the king’s armor and instead selected to go into battle with five smooth stones taken from the river. She faced a battle of her own and she determined to apply this same idea to her situation by selecting her own five smooth stones from the Living Water

Five Scriptures from God’s Word that spoke truth and assurance into her situation.

I loved this and thought you might too.

We all have situations don’t we? Job situations. Financial situations. Child situations. Marriage situations. Situations in which there are giants to be faced, battled, and defeated. Either for ourselves or for people we love.

What better way to do this than with our own five smooth stones taken from the Living Water?

I know I have a particular situation I am praying over. One where hurting hearts are hurting each other. One that should be full of joy, life, and love and is instead full of discouragement, doubt, and a sense of failure. A situation I know Jesus has the power to heal but closed hearts and minds are not inviting him in.

I have entered into God’s Word seeking five stones to claim as my battle plan on behalf of people I love. Five scriptures that I will speak, pray, meditate on, and memorize that are specific to this one situation.

David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will hand you over to me…” (1 Sam 17:45-46).

David, with his five stones and his sling, pronounced victory before the battle even started because he had absolute confidence in God. With our five scriptures, we too can say to the situation, “You come against me (or my loved ones) with weapons of this world, but I come against you with the very Word of God. This battle is the Lord’s!”

This is important. David still had to go into battle. We will still have to go into battle too. We will still have to do the hard work. But we can do it with the assurance of victory even as we fight for it because we are well armed with our five stones.
