Believing God,  Devotions,  Experiencing God

Job, God’s Confidence

Job is a difficult book to wrap our minds and hearts around. A seemingly upstanding member of society who is well respected and reveres God is stricken in unimaginable ways. He loses his finances, his children, and even his health. And he has no idea why. Our sense of justice is assaulted. On the surface it seems that Job is a plaything between God and Satan. A pawn in a giant chess match. Disposable.

Have you ever felt that way? Like Job, life can be going along fine and then out of nowhere we are schwacked with car repairs, house repairs, and an ER visit all at the same time. We get the divorce papers, the pink slip, the foreclosure notice, or the somber diagnosis. Suddenly, we feel like the whole universe is working against us.

We can read Job and pass it off as a lesson that “sometimes bad things happen to good people.” While that is true it does not begin to breathe the life into our hard situations that God desires.

From the first three chapters we unearth deeper truths we can claim and hang on to when the hard times come.
